Okay... so my dad had a BIG dream of owning another FJ40 Toyota Landcruiser.
He had one when I was a kid but he had to get rid of it for various reasons.
So... some 20 years later... he and my mom decided to go for it. Yup, they found a beautifully restored 1979 FJ40 and they invested.
Fun stuff.
Honestly, it's the kind of vehicle that makes men do double takes. It stirs up images of dangerous mountain roads, African safaris and open beaches.
It makes your heart race. You can't help but give it the thumbs up as it drives by. Yeah... it's that kind of truck.
But here's the thing. It's a 1979.
So that means... no air conditioning. That means a manual choke. It means it's a 4-speed stick shift. It means road noise and maximum speeds of about 62 mph.
That's right. There are quirks to owning this vehicle.
That got me thinking.
There are always "quirks" that come along with our BIG dreams... aren't there?
These are the "less convenient" things that can be a part of walking out our BIG dreams.
Let's talk about some other examples...
The pastor of our church is living his BIG dream by leading a church. But one of the quirks of his BIG dream is that it's rare that he and his family can go out to eat without someone stopping by the table to say hello or check in.
A friend is walking out a BIG dream of owning a bike shop, but he spends most summer days getting up at 4 am to fix bicycles.
These quirks aren't deal breakers. They're just things to think about and get ready for. Right?
What might some of the "quirks" be for you?
Maybe it's a little less sleep when you're working on your BIG dream on the side? Maybe it means a few more PB&J's and mac and cheese dinners as your investing in your BIG dream? Maybe it's working on your dream when everyone else seems to be getting caught up on their favorite tv show.
Again... these aren't deal breakers. But... maybe you need to give them some thought and get ready for them.
For my dad... it's meant planning ahead a bit. It's meant slowing down a bit too. It's meant not talking on the cell phone while he's driving. (Stick shift doesn't allow for texting either!) It's even meant allowing for a little sweat some days too! (He lives in Iowa for crying out loud.)
But... as long as he allows for these things... you can't peal that huge grin off his face as he drives. And THAT is a beautiful thing.
How about you?
Are you ready for some of the quirks that might come with your BIG dream?
If not, how can you get ready for them?
Keep dreaming BIG,
Mitch Matthews
